Jim, I'd SO love to see you run with the xenophobia cartoon! That's a great idea. On the counterpoint you could also highlight the way Bush on 9/11 was full-bore into the fight against terrorism and is now selling off US security to a country known to have ties with terror groups.
How quickly the President's priorities change...
Thick Mints! That is hilarious!
I'm actually in the UAE right now on business and would like to make a couple of quick observations:
1) There was almost no reaction at all to the Danish cartoon thing here. Every once in a while you'll see a small store boycotting Danish products (both of them) but no protests, banners, effigies, etc. People here mostly don't care.
2) The UAE has been very supportive of our "war on terror;" we have extensive naval operations here and excellent relations with the government. People here are somewhat confused at America's reaction to the DP World thing. Sometimes slightly offended. Generally the comments I hear from locals are along the lines of "you know this makes Americans look very bad ... nobody else in the world has had this reaction."
My view of the Middle East totally changed when I came here for work. This isn't the place you see on TV or read about in the paper. It's really very close to home.
Still a fan...
