Does This Cartoon Need a Caption?

A wordless cartoon is a rare gem.

They're hard to pull off, particularly in editorial cartooning, because so often we must help the reader understand the news item to which we're referring and further the message beyond what the drawing is able to convey. On those occasions when the drawing alone can carry the full weight of the message, I delight in sitting back and watching the power of the image do its magic.

One such cartoon I was proud of recently showed the torch of the Statue of Liberty just visible over a barb-wired border wall. I'm satisfied that my point came across clearly on that one.

So as I inked this cartoon about Ben Roethlisberger's helmetless crash, I kept wondering if the point was coming across clearly enough without the addition of a thought bubble or a caption. ("Guess I won't be needing this helmet." Duh.) Leaving it without some hit-you-over-the-head caption can be perilous, but on the other hand I hate to dumb down a cartoon needlessly.

What do you think? Does it need a caption?

If he was reaching for the helmet to put it on "No Brainer" would work.

"Fumble" ?

LOL, that is priceless.

I think a caption would take away from the cartoon. I'd leave one off.

How about the caption, "Nothing in the playbook about wearing this..."...

No caption needed, but maybe a subtle reference to karma for what the Steelers did to the Bengals in the playoffs? ;)

Actually I think a different angle without a caption might be better. Looking from the side down the line of scrimmage with Big Ben (sans helmet) ready to take the snap on one side, and the car spinning its wheels on the turf on the other side.

But I definitely believe this is one of those cartoons that would be worse with a caption.

No caption needed as long as it's obvious that it's Ben from the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Please no caption, it would make the cartoon more dull.

If anything else needs to be said, those viewers just don't get it, and wouldn't understand even with a caption.

took me a second to figure it out, but getting the old noggin in gear isn't a bad thing.

I thought it was a great cartoon, easily understandable, and poinent. He would be obviously stupid for not wearing a helmet in a football game, and equally stupid for not wearing a helmet when being tackled by a half ton truck instead of 300 pound lineman.
Keep up the good work. I love that you do sports cartoons every once in a while! Thanks.

Brilliant. No caption needed. My opinion of him plummeted the minute I hear of his accident. What a role model for the kids. "If Ben doesn't need to wear a helmet, neither do I." Moron. Great cartoon. Keep it up.

Took me awhile to focus on Ben, my eye was drawn towards the car and action at the middle to top of the image. By the time I got to Ben, it took some of the impact 'pun intended' out for me. It might also be that being in Cincy this had something to do with the news with that team as of late.

I got this cartoon right away, even without being able to read "Roethlisberger" on my screen. Absolutely no need for a single word! I also think the vantage point for this cartoon is probably the best possible to get your point across.

There's nothing worse than being bludgeoned by words when a wonderfully executed drawing says it all. Leave it. you're done. put down the pen. go have a cup of coffee. ; )

NO CAPTION! It took me a second only because it was so deliciously, wickedly, amusing. The slow realization actually increased my giggles as my conscious fought, telling me it really isn't funny when someone is hurt but the smile remained, especially since the poor fool seems to have come out of it basically ok and very repentant of his helmetless folly.

typical jim borgman.

you always have to focus on the negative, dont you?

in your cartoon today, it has bill gates relaxing on a giant hammock, implying that he's leaving microsoft to do nothing.

of course, in the unslanted reality, you would know that he's stepping back from microsoft to do more work for his charity foundation.

sometimes it appears that you are completely clueless.

Another fun thing you could do is to tap the collective wisdom of the "crowd" to see what caption ideas they come up with. One easy way to do this is to post your cartoon on www.inChorus.com as ask people to come up with caption ideas.
