Challenger
Lee Ann from Middletown asked me to post this tribute drawing to teacher Christa McAuliffe who died in the Challenger disaster twenty years ago.
I remember that on that day I struggled to execute the idea I had of a child offering an apple to the heavens. I must have torn up three or four versions in which the child's hand was drawn realistically. Finally in exasperation I drew the image more the way a child might draw it and it became one of my most commented-upon cartoons.

I like it. It's a beautiful tribute.
Thank you so much. It is still as touching as I remember. What really spooked me was that it was 11 years almost to the day of the
Apollo 1 fire. We were all at a cast party after a play and the hostess' father had us all come and watch that horror unfold. You never saw a high school party fall apart so fast.
Lee Ann
That is beautiful.
