Sandwich Generation
The phrase "Sandwich Generation," meaning those of us burning our candles at both ends to take care of aging parents and young children, has been rolling around in my head since reading the Caretakers special section in the Enquirer on Sunday.
Then a friend drove the theme home with a nightmare story about her recent holidays, whisking her sick child out of her father-in-law's hospital room when she discovered a fever of 103 coming on fast. Too sick to travel home, she spent the next three days in a hotel room near the airport changing her daughter's cold compresses and being driven out of her mind by the Cartoon Network.
My doctor frequently reminds me that those of us in the Sandwich Generation need to take care of ourselves while minding the slices of bread on either side.
Here's a brief sketchbook history of the Sandwich Generation idea I'm working on today (chronological from bottom to top.)

great to find your blog. i've always been a big fan of your work. You get so much character into your comics. love it.
Thanks for all the attention being paid to the caregivers and those in the sandwich generation. I've dedicated my life to working with older adults and those that care for them. It's hard to watch people struggle with the realities of caring for aging parents and loved ones... watching them feel alone and unappreciated. It is refreshing to see that others understand the hard work of caregivers and are shedding light on the subject.
".. so rich white people can shop"? Great, Jim. Just great. Maybe next you can draw a panel with a phrase such as "so poor dumb black people can (whatever)." Thanks for the racial animus. You're an example to all lazy race baiters everywhere.
just a post-script to the above comment about 'racial animus'... i do not recall a black neighborhood taking anyone's home due to eminent domain... nor do i recall any hispanics, asians, indians, etc.... hmmm. did this person ever consider that your comment regarding rich white people, just might be true? i assume that the post was written by..... a rich white person ;) truth hurts sometimes, doesnt it?
