Take a peek over Jim Borgman's shoulder

Jim Borgman has been the Enquirer's editorial cartoonist since 1976. Borgman has won every major award in his field, including the 1991 Pulitzer Prize, the National Cartoonists Society's Reuben Award for Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year in 1993, and most recently, the Adamson Award in 2005 as International Cartoonist of the Year. His award-winning daily comic strip Zits, co-created with Jerry Scott, chronicles the life of 15-year-old Jeremy Duncan, his family and friends through the glories and challenges of the teenage years. Evolution of Wednesday's cartoon

When I file my cartoons each day they shoot straight over to my buddy Bruce, who proofreads and cobbles the Enquirer's editorial page together. When I checked to make sure he'd received the image, he gave me exactly the comment I was hoping for.

"I thought you were going with the standard 'Will the last one to leave...' line, then I saw the word 'shoot'." Bruce gave me a little wince to show me the caption had landed just where I had hoped -- in the gut.

Cartoonists live for moments like that.

But I have to confess, I was closer to taking the cliche route than I'd like to admit. All morning I had fiddled with ways to depict the "turn out the lights" phrase without taking it to the next level.

Very amusing. Thanks -- and I really would have liked this one even if you'd gone with the standard version of the phrase. Had just the right touch.

I had the same exact reaction as Bruce, so in the words of W.... Mission Accomplished.

Sorry, Mr. Borgman, but this cartoon wasn't a punch in the gut. It was a slap in the face.

When will WLW, the Enquirer, Bill Cunningham, yourself, and other such media entities stop taking cheap shots at the city and start taking action to fix things? At least Peter Bronson had the courage to propose a solution to a problem.

Does Cincinnati have problems? Yes. Do they get fixed by cheap cartoons or whining on talk radio? No.

And if you didn't notice, I used my full name when signing into this blog. I'm the Finneytown resident quoted in Cliff Radel's article of a few days ago. Cincinnati's public schools are the only reason we're not city residents, but we found the best first-tier school district so we can have the best of the city and public schools. In a few years when our kids start at UC, there' s a real good chance we'll be moving into a city neighborhood.

(pause)

I suppose your cartoon accomplished its purpose. I'm more determined than ever to keep spreading the news that Cincinnati really is a great city.

Have a good day, and keep up the good work.

I had to look twice at the word "shoot." Yeah...it got me.

I haven't lived in Cincinnati for a long time and was unaware people were leaving the city. When I looked into it, I found articles on increased crime in Cincinnati, particularly in the years following the "2001 riots."

I love Cincy. Having lived in White Plains, NY (30 min north of NYC), and a very small
(-1000 population) town in Canada I realize now how Cincinnati was a wonderful place to live. Please do some cartoons depicting all that's great about Cincinnati, (Eden Park, Krohn Conservatory, Serpentine Wall, Planetarium, Music Hall, etc. etc.)

Dear Mr. Borgman: 6/23/06

Under separte cover, I am mailing a "revised" computer version of your "Purple People Bridge Climb"

Would love to share a cup of coffee with you or even lunch. I retired to my coputer after 37 years with the United States Shoe Corp. and teach basic computers at Univ. of Cincinnati as retirement brain-food.

Forgive the enhancements and would enjoy sharing the "HOW" of computer cartoon enhancement.

My kindest regards,

charles.mincer@uc.edu

Face it, Cincy is a dump where cheaters like Dan Howett want to claim to be citizens and receive the benefits without actually living in the city. It's like cheating on your wife with an old high school friend, isn't it Danny Boy?
