Take a peek over Jim Borgman's shoulder

Jim Borgman has been the Enquirer's editorial cartoonist since 1976. Borgman has won every major award in his field, including the 1991 Pulitzer Prize, the National Cartoonists Society's Reuben Award for Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year in 1993, and most recently, the Adamson Award in 2005 as International Cartoonist of the Year. His award-winning daily comic strip Zits, co-created with Jerry Scott, chronicles the life of 15-year-old Jeremy Duncan, his family and friends through the glories and challenges of the teenage years. Since debuting in July 1997, Zits has regularly finished #1 in reader comics polls across America and is syndicated in more than 1300 newspapers around the world.

Hi Jim, are you starting to use the computer to add the gray tones?... As a cartoonist myself I know the computer it's a big help, sometimes, if I'm in a hurry, I draw all my stuff with my tablet, but I still love to have an original that shows exactly the way it's printed, what you think about it?...

It has occurred to me that as more cartoonists begin to apply tone, edit, manipulate compositions, resize and shift elements of their drawings on screen, the concept of "originals" may change. The original may simply be the "first draft" of the version of a cartoon that is finally printed or posted.

It would be interesting to hear the thoughts of a curator like Lucy Caswell at OSU on this topic.

As an illustrator and collector of original comic art, I can see both sides. For me, doing illustration work takes much less time when I can scan in the ink drawing and finish in photoshop. I still like to work 'the old fashioned way' with paints, markers..etc but in the interest of time, my Mac helps tremendously.

As a collector, I love seeing all the work that went into a piece. Whiteout, the underlying pencil drawing, notes in the margins and all the other things that make originals fun to look at.

I enjoy seeing work by Bennett and Sack, as much as I enjoy seeing Borgman's or Oliphant work.

What I really don't like is do it half by hand and half in computer, maybe it's silly, but if I do all the art in the computer I can save a file with all the "draft", "ink", "tones", "colors" layers, so, it's like a "digital original" and if I use ink, white out, paper cuts, or printed tones, I try to finish everything right on my piece of paper. and that way keep my "analog original"

I was gonna say that the message hit the nail on the head. I had to get a new cell phone 4 weeks ago - and I still have no clue on how to use the speakerphone, or all the other items.

good call on this cartoon.

:)

How rude to stereotype mobile phone reps. And to anonymous that can't operate your phone- all you have to do is read the manual. It isn't rocket science.
In a positive note, I compliment your artistic abilities, you are very talented.

As someone who has tried to help his baby boomer mother operate her cell phone more than once, I find this cartoon hilarious.

Fear not Anonymous 3:09: the AAMPR (American Association of Mobile Phone
Reps) is on the way, as we speak, to picket in front of Borgman's house.

back to anon 3:09 -

what's funny about your comment is I AM a rocket scientist. And the stupid phone is not intuitive at all.

and the mobile phone reps? I don't see any stereo-typing in the drawing at all.

what in your personality makes you condescending to people posting on the blog?
