Take a peek over Jim Borgman's shoulder

Jim Borgman has been the Enquirer's editorial cartoonist since 1976. Borgman has won every major award in his field, including the 1991 Pulitzer Prize, the National Cartoonists Society's Reuben Award for Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year in 1993, and most recently, the Adamson Award in 2005 as International Cartoonist of the Year. His award-winning daily comic strip Zits, co-created with Jerry Scott, chronicles the life of 15-year-old Jeremy Duncan, his family and friends through the glories and challenges of the teenage years. Since debuting in July 1997, Zits has regularly finished #1 in reader comics polls across America and is syndicated in more than 1300 newspapers around the world.

Now THAT'S appropriate! Sad... but appropriate.

Now then Jim, time to print up copies and mail them to everyone in Congress.

It may not change things, but it might put a bad taste in somebody's mouth.

typical jim borgman:

it really is unreal when it comes to how big of a jerk you are.

instead of focusing on our indepedence and our great history, you once again choose to have a negative attitude and talk about one of the problems going on in our country.

i would hope that you could take a day, one single day, and not be so negative and celebrate america instead of insult it.

i guess that's not an option for you. you are nothing but a big waste of payroll, and i don't care what any of your awards say. the enquirer, cincinnati, and the united states would be better off without you.

Re : anonymous @ 5:22 PM

Gee! Some people can't handle the truth. And as for accusing Borgman as 'negative'....if that ain't the pot calling the kettle black!!!! That was the most negative, abusive and misguided post I have seen on this blog. This person obviously doesn't understand the role of the editorial cartoonist, using humor, satire, sharp observation and graphic skill to convey a simple message, so adeptly done in the said cartoon. If the blogger wants to view cartoons with a 'happy happy joy joy' twist, then suggest he or she tune into the Disney channel.

It's the frickin 4th of July.

You'd think that for one time he'd be positive but I guess that's not an option. I guess he can't think freely enough to create a cartoon with a positive message.

That's not his job.

You obviously just don't get it.

his job isnt to be negative all the time, you moron.

You hit the nail on the head.
When are we going to see some changes in gas prices as a positive.

Great toon. Sure stirred up the anonymous crowd.

Keep tellin' it like it is.

Mr 'anonymous' 7:45 AM, (we'll call him "Mr Negative", also refer to his earlier postings)doesn't quite grasp the irony of his posting...accusing Borgman of being 'too negative' while his own postings are negative, nasty, and abusive.

Nobody said Borgman's job is to be 'negative all the time', (where did you get that from Mr Negative?)....if you look at my earlier posting, I said his using job is to use "humor, satire, sharp observation and graphic skill to convey a simple message, so adeptly done in the said cartoon".

'Mr Negative" still doesn't get it.

Mr. Anonymous 6:34 PM (we'll call him Mr. Oblivious) says that no one said his job was to be negative.

No one has to say anything! Look at all his strips and see how many are negative compared to positive.

You don't get it Mr. Oblivious because you're too blind to look at the facts, and the facts are the vast majority of Borgman's cartoons are negative because he doesn't have the creativity to create something positive.

He listens to the news, which is all negative, and forms his opinion completely off of that, and draws these negative cartoons day in and day out. He doesn't think for himself at all. Open your eyes and take a look at the world around you, Mr. Oblivious.

mr negative is so way off the mark here. he is the one that is so oblivious to what is going on. get real, buddy. that cartoon was spot on. like the other guy said, go and watch the disney channel if you can't handle the real world. now i'll sit back and wait for you to start abusing me and calling me names.

i'm quite capable of handling negative things, but not everything in this world is negative. that might be hard to believe for you because all you do is look at borgman's cartoons. read whats been said before you comment and make yourself look like a fool. it would be nice that for one day, ONE SINGLE DAY, he could do a nice cartoon that would symbolize our freedom instead of once again putting down america and pointing out there problems.

jim borgman is just too much of a jerk to do something positive, and he doesn't care because i guarantee he doesn't read any of the comments written and he doesn't care what people think.

Perhaps the point MANY of you are missing is that what you see as him being negative is really his way of trying to show people the ugly and uncomfortable truth about our lives.

For so long we've driven gas-guzzling SUVs like the Excursion and Hummers and Jeeps when we have absolutely no need for such vehicles in an urban environment.

What we NEED is more cars like the Chrysler Smart car, the tiny car Steve Martin drives in the Pink Panther. It gets 60mpg and will soon be able to handle various fuels and hybrid options.

What we NEED is for people to vote for a transit system in this area that works.

What we NEED is for people around here to wake up and realize that driving around alone in a vehicle that gets 13mpg is part of the problem that has our gas prices so high.

Jim gets that, I get that, but we're so stuck on our "American identity" of having 2 or 3 big cars per family that our arrogance blames our troubles on everyone but ourselves. To borrow a phrase from Earl Pitts:

WAKE UP AMERICA!!!!

So which is it?

You say you don't agree with Borgman, yet you rant on about topics where you agree with his cartoons (check out all his previous SUV and BIG CAR cartoons). You say Borgman's view should be more sweet and rosy, but then you say, wake up and look at the world around you (which isn't sweet and rosy).

Borgman is a realist and portrays the world truthfully as it is. Just look at the recent cartoon about 'Have you hugged your principal today?", and many others like it.

That's about appreciating the teachers and your school.

If that's not a positive message, then I don't know what is.

You can't argue with facts.
